The Gaming Commission of Ghana has sensitized students of Sokode Senior High School in Ho, in the Volta Region, on the harms of underage gaming. The students were taken through the effects of underage gaming on their physical health, mental health, academic performance, and social skills. They were also educated on the dangers with gambling and related challenges such as addiction, anxiety, and depression.
Officials of the Commission also took the students through legal provision relating to minors involvement in gaming and their associated sanction. E. g, section 56 clause 3 of the Gaming Act 2006, (Act 721) states that:
“A child who uses a gambling machine, or enters a place in which a gambling machine is used, commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction by a juvenile court to a fine of not more than one hundred penalty units or a custodial sentence that the court determines”. The students were advised to desist from patronizing gaming and gaming related activities.
The team emphasized on measures undertaken by the Commission to curb underage gaming such as the ban on analogue gaming machines popularly called jackpot machines.
